Bereavement charity at 'financial crisis point'

A Birmingham-based charity that supports bereaved families says it is at a "financial crisis point" and could be forced to shut its doors within months. Edward's Trust, which has helped children and adults cope with the loss of a loved one for over three decades, has launched an urgent appeal for £200,000 to keep its services running.

The charity's leadership says the funding shortfall is the result of rising operational costs, reduced grant income, and a sharp increase in demand for its counselling and support programs. Without the money, the trust warns it will have to close by the summer, leaving hundreds of families without specialist help during some of the most difficult moments of their lives.

"We are not just talking about a few difficult months. This is existential," said a spokesperson for the organisation. "We have already cut back on training and paused some community outreach work. But the core services, the ones that people rely on when they lose a child or a parent, are still running at full capacity. That is why the cost is so high."

The charity is now calling on local businesses, community groups, and individuals to step forward. It has set a six-month deadline to raise the funds, and says every donation, no matter how small, will make a difference. The team is also exploring new fundraising events and corporate partnerships, but time is running out.

Edward's Trust has supported thousands of people since it was founded in 1988, offering one-to-one therapy, group sessions, and practical advice for those navigating grief. Its staff and volunteers say the thought of turning away a newly bereaved family is unbearable. The charity is asking anyone who can help to visit its website or get in touch directly. The next few weeks, they say, will be critical.
