Chicago Commits Over $300 Million to 15 Affordable Housing Developments

The City of Chicago has announced a major financial commitment to address its housing crisis, allocating more than $300 million to 15 affordable housing projects through its Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) program. This significant investment is expected to create or preserve a total of 1,223 housing units across the city, providing much-needed relief for low- and moderate-income families.

The selected developments span multiple neighborhoods, targeting areas with high demand for affordable options. The funding, which combines federal tax credits with local subsidies, will support both new construction and the rehabilitation of existing buildings. City officials emphasized that the projects are designed to ensure long-term affordability, with units remaining income-restricted for at least 30 years.

Among the approved projects are mixed-use buildings that will also include community spaces, retail, and social services. Several developments focus on senior housing, supportive housing for individuals experiencing homelessness, and family-sized units. The initiative aligns with Chicago’s broader goal of creating or preserving thousands of affordable homes by 2030.

Mayor Brandon Johnson’s administration highlighted that the LIHTC program is a critical tool for leveraging private investment while maintaining public oversight. Developers receiving the awards must comply with strict wage and tenant protection standards. Construction is expected to begin within the next 12 months, with completion staggered over the following two to three years.

This round of financing marks one of the largest single allocations in the city’s history, reflecting an urgent response to rising rents and a shrinking stock of affordable housing. Community advocates have praised the move but stress that continued investment is necessary to meet the scale of need.
