Dave Ramsey Blames Online Sportsbooks for Gen Z Money Troubles

Dave Ramsey has aimed sharp criticism at the online sports betting industry, arguing that it is damaging the finances of young Americans faster than almost any other trend in the past three decades. The personal finance commentator singled out two major sportsbook operators by name, but his argument rests less on moral outrage and more on numbers that show up plainly in corporate earnings reports.

That financial angle deserves attention from anyone just starting to build wealth. Sportsbook companies generate revenue through a model that depends on high volumes of repeated bets, and their quarterly results show how effectively that model converts user activity into profit. For a generation already dealing with high housing costs, student debt, and stagnant wages, the money flowing out through betting apps represents a direct drain on savings that could otherwise go toward investing or emergency funds.

Ramsey's broader point is that easy access through a phone has removed nearly every barrier that once slowed down gambling. Deposits happen in seconds, promotions encourage frequent play, and losses are framed as entertainment rather than financial setbacks. Critics of the industry say those design choices target younger users specifically.

Whether or not you agree with Ramsey's tone, the underlying warning is practical. Money lost to betting apps does not compound, does not earn interest, and does not come back on its own. For Gen Z, avoiding that trap may matter more than picking the right index fund.
