Finance Hiring Still Favors Degree Holders for Top Paying Roles

Recruiters filling the highest paying jobs in finance continue to treat a university degree as a basic requirement, even as some employers experiment with skills based hiring. The preference is less about prestige and more about proof. A degree signals that a candidate can handle technical material, meet deadlines, and finish something difficult.

That signal matters most at the entry level, where recruiters have little work history to evaluate. For roles in investment banking, asset management, and private equity, the volume of applicants makes screening necessary. A degree acts as a simple filter, and candidates without one often struggle to get a first interview regardless of their ability.

The pattern does not mean a degree guarantees success. Recruiters say they still look for evidence of competence, including internships, certifications, and practical knowledge of financial models. A degree opens the door, but it does not carry a candidate through the process.

Some firms have dropped formal degree requirements in recent years, citing a desire to widen their talent pool. Those changes have been more common in operations, customer service, and technology roles than in front office positions. Pay differences remain stark. Jobs that require a degree typically offer higher starting salaries and clearer paths to promotion.

For now, the finance industry appears unlikely to abandon the degree as a screening tool. Candidates who lack one can still break in, but they usually need a stronger portfolio of skills and experience to offset the missing credential.
