‘It seems crazy’: SpaceX’s orbital data centre bet tests physics and finance

Elon Musk's latest idea is to put data centers in space. The company wants to launch thousands of satellites that would carry computing power for artificial intelligence. Musk says this could solve the huge energy and land problems that ground-based data centers face. But the plan has experts scratching their heads.

The math is brutal. A single modern data center on Earth uses about 100 megawatts of power. To match that in orbit, you would need hundreds of heavy satellites. Each launch costs tens of millions of dollars. Even with reusable rockets, the price adds up fast. And that is just the hardware cost. You also need to cool the equipment in the vacuum of space, protect it from radiation, and fix it when it breaks. There is no repair truck in orbit.

Then there is the network problem. Data centers work best when they are close to users. A satellite in low Earth orbit is about 500 kilometers away. That adds a delay, or latency, that could slow down AI responses. For some tasks, that is fine. For real-time applications like autonomous driving or video calls, it is a dealbreaker.

Musk has done impossible things before. He landed rockets on barges and built a car company that almost went bankrupt. But this time, the physics and the finance are fighting against him. The satellites would need to be massive, and the constellation would need to be enormous. Even SpaceX, with its Starlink network, has not launched that many spacecraft. The cost would run into the hundreds of billions of dollars.

Some engineers say it is not completely crazy. Solar power in space is constant, and there is no weather. But the cooling problem is real. In a vacuum, you cannot use fans. You have to radiate heat away, which requires big radiators. That adds weight and cost.

For now, the idea is just a concept. SpaceX has not announced a timeline or a budget. But the fact that Musk is talking about it shows how desperate the AI industry is for power. Data centers are eating up electricity grids, and companies are running out of places to build. Space might be the last frontier, but it is also the most expensive one.
