Micron reported its fourth quarter earnings after the bell Wednesday, surpassing analyst estimates on both revenue and profit. The memory chip maker also delivered a better than expected outlook for the current quarter, signaling that demand for its products remains solid despite broader concerns about the semiconductor market.
The company posted quarterly revenue that topped Wall Street forecasts, driven by steady sales of DRAM and NAND memory used in data centers, personal computers, and mobile devices. Earnings per share also came in above what analysts had projected, a result that reflects tighter cost controls and improved pricing in some product categories.
For the first quarter of its new fiscal year, Micron offered guidance that exceeded consensus estimates. Management pointed to recovering demand from data center customers and a gradual improvement in inventory levels across the industry. The company said it expects revenue and margins to hold up better than previously anticipated.
Investors have watched Micron closely as a bellwether for the chip sector. Memory prices had been under pressure for several quarters, but recent trends suggest the market may be stabilizing. The strong guidance from Micron adds to the view that the worst of the downturn could be over.
Shares moved in after hours trading following the release. Executives are expected to discuss the results and outlook in more detail on a conference call with analysts.
