Nike has watched its stock value fall by nearly half over the course of the year, a decline that has raised uncomfortable questions about the company's ability to hold its ground in a rapidly shifting retail landscape. The drop of 47 percent reflects mounting pressure from competitors, changing consumer habits, and a broader slowdown in discretionary spending on athletic wear.
But according to one retail chief executive, the worst may still be ahead. The rise of AI shopping agents, tools that search, compare, and buy products on behalf of consumers, could chip away at the brand loyalty that Nike has spent decades building. These agents do not care about swooshes or celebrity endorsements. They care about price, availability, reviews, and delivery speed. If a rival offers a comparable running shoe for less, the agent will simply pick it.
That shift matters because Nike has long relied on emotional connection and cultural cachet to justify premium pricing. When a machine makes the decision, that advantage shrinks. The company would need to compete on the cold metrics that algorithms reward, a game that favors efficient operators and aggressive discounters.
Analysts say Nike is not standing still. It has invested in its own digital channels and direct-to-consumer sales, hoping to keep shoppers inside its ecosystem. Still, the threat from autonomous shopping tools is real and growing. For a brand built on human desire, learning to win over software may prove to be the hardest race yet.
