Rockstar Games has expanded its workforce dramatically to finish Grand Theft Auto 6, nearly doubling its headcount since development on the project began. The studio has hired thousands of additional developers, artists, and testers across its offices worldwide, a scale-up that reflects the size and complexity of what is expected to be one of the most expensive games ever produced.
The hiring push has not come cheap. Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar's parent company, has absorbed rising development costs and payroll expenses at the same time it faces investor skepticism. Shares of Take-Two are down roughly 20 percent in the month leading up to the Nov. 19 launch, a decline that has surprised some analysts given the franchise's track record.
Wall Street's concern centers on a few issues. Some investors question whether the game will hit its release date without another delay, a pattern that has followed the title since its first trailer. Others worry that the massive investment in staff and marketing will weigh on near-term earnings even if the game sells tens of millions of copies. There is also uncertainty about how the online component will be monetized after launch.
Rockstar has kept details about the game tightly controlled, releasing only a handful of trailers and screenshots. That silence has done little to calm nervous shareholders, even as preorder numbers remain strong.
The Nov. 19 launch will be a defining moment for both the studio and its parent company. A smooth release and strong reviews could reverse the stock slide quickly. Another delay or a rocky debut would give Wall Street's skeptics exactly what they have been warning about.
