A financial therapist is urging travelers to have honest conversations about money before they leave for a group vacation. The advice comes as friends plan summer getaways and face the awkward question of who pays for what.
The therapist, who works with a payment app, calls the practice "cash yapping." The idea is simple. Before the trip, friends should talk about lodging, groceries and restaurant checks. They should also decide how to handle activities, rental cars and unexpected costs.
Many friend groups default to splitting everything 50/50. That approach can work, but it can also create tension. One person may book a pricey hotel while another is trying to save. Someone may skip expensive dinners but still get asked to pay an equal share. Left unspoken, these gaps can turn a fun trip into a source of resentment.
The therapist suggests a few ground rules. First, set a budget range for the trip and share it openly. Second, decide which costs will be shared and which will stay individual. Third, pick a simple way to track spending, such as a shared note or an app. Fourth, agree on what happens if someone wants to opt out of a costly activity.
Talking about money early may feel uncomfortable. But a short conversation before the trip can prevent bigger conflicts later. Friends who plan together, the therapist says, are more likely to enjoy the vacation and stay friends after they return home.
