South Korean crypto exchanges saw revenue fall by 50% in 2026's first half

Major South Korean cryptocurrency exchanges Upbit and Bithumb have both reported a sharp 50 percent decline in revenue during the first half of 2026, according to recent financial disclosures. The significant downturn marks one of the most challenging periods for the country's digital asset industry since the last major market correction.

The revenue slump comes amid a broader cooling in trading volumes across domestic platforms. Analysts point to several factors behind the drop, including reduced retail participation, tighter regulatory scrutiny, and a shift in investor interest toward overseas markets. Upbit, which has long dominated the local market share, saw its earnings fall in line with its smaller rival Bithumb, signaling that the slowdown is not isolated to any single exchange.

Industry observers note that the decline reflects a maturing market rather than a collapse. Many South Korean traders have become more cautious, holding assets for longer periods instead of engaging in frequent, high-fee trades. new compliance requirements have raised operational costs for exchanges, further squeezing profit margins.

Despite the bleak numbers, some experts remain cautiously optimistic. They suggest that the current consolidation phase could pave the way for more sustainable growth, especially if institutional participation increases. However, with global crypto prices remaining volatile and domestic sentiment still fragile, the second half of 2026 is expected to be just as challenging for these platforms.
