A new law in West Virginia mandates that high school students must complete a half-credit course in personal finance during their 11th or 12th grade to graduate. This requirement officially took effect in June 2023, marking a significant step towards equipping young individuals with essential financial knowledge. The first group of students subject to this requirement will be the ninth graders entering Huntington High in the 2024-25 school year.
In a proactive response to this educational shift, a dedicated student from Huntington High's Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) chapter has taken the initiative to promote financial literacy among younger students. Alongside her peers, she has been conducting personal finance lessons at local middle schools, emphasizing the importance of understanding money management from an early age. This grassroots effort not only reinforces the value of the new high school curriculum but also fosters a culture of financial awareness within the community.
