Scott Melker recently weighed in on the long-running debate between bitcoin and gold, arguing that bitcoin holds a stronger position as a form of hard money in today's economy. While gold once backed the US dollar and has been a store of value for centuries, Melker points out that bitcoin offers distinct advantages that gold simply cannot match.
One key factor is portability. Gold is heavy and expensive to move or store securely. Bitcoin, on the other hand, can be transferred across borders in minutes with minimal cost. Another issue is verifiability. Testing gold for purity requires specialized equipment and expertise, while bitcoin's authenticity can be checked by anyone with an internet connection.
Scarcity also plays a major role. Gold supply increases as miners extract more from the earth, which means its total amount grows over time. Bitcoin has a fixed supply cap of 21 million coins, making it truly finite. This mathematical certainty gives bitcoin an edge as a hedge against inflation and currency debasement.
Melker also highlighted that bitcoin is more adaptable to the digital age. Younger generations are more comfortable with digital assets, and the infrastructure for trading and storing crypto continues to improve. While gold remains a traditional safe haven, bitcoin is emerging as the hard money of the future.
