William Jewell College in Liberty announced that its financial crisis has officially ended, capping an 18-month period of aggressive restructuring that included cutting academic programs, launching new graduate degrees, and more than doubling student enrollment. College leaders said the turnaround puts the institution on stable footing for the first time in years.
The private liberal arts college had faced mounting budget deficits and declining enrollment, forcing administrators to make difficult choices. Over the past year and a half, the school eliminated several underperforming undergraduate majors, consolidated administrative roles, and renegotiated vendor contracts. At the same time, it introduced new master's programs in fields like nursing and business analytics, which attracted a wave of working adults seeking flexible online and evening options.
Enrollment jumped from roughly 700 students to over 1,500, according to college officials. That surge, combined with cost reductions, allowed the school to close its budget gap and rebuild reserves. President Elizabeth MacLeod Walls said the college is now projecting balanced budgets for the next several years and has regained the confidence of donors and accreditors.
Faculty and staff were notified of the milestone in a campus-wide email. While some employees lost jobs during the restructuring, administrators say the remaining workforce is leaner but more focused. Students have also seen changes, including new career coaching services and updated facilities funded by the enrollment growth.
The college still faces long-term challenges, including competition from larger state universities and demographic shifts in the region. But for now, the crisis that once threatened the school's survival appears to be over.
