Erie County Community College, known as EC3, has received federal approval to distribute financial aid to its students. School officials announced on Monday that the institution will now be able to award Pell Grants and other forms of federal assistance, marking a major step forward for the young college.
The approval means that eligible students can apply for need-based Pell Grants, which do not need to be repaid, as well as federal student loans and work-study programs. This change is expected to make college more accessible for many local residents who previously had to rely on limited funding options or attend other institutions to receive federal aid.
EC3 opened its doors in 2021 with a mission to provide affordable higher education and workforce training to Erie County. However, without the ability to directly administer federal aid, many students faced financial barriers. The new designation allows the college to process aid applications through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, system.
College leaders said the move will help remove a significant obstacle for students, particularly those from low-income backgrounds. They also noted that the approval follows a rigorous application and review process by the U.S. Department of Education. With this new capability, EC3 expects to see an increase in enrollment as more students can now afford to attend.
