PT Bank Negara Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (PTBRY) (Q2 2026) Earnings Call Highlights: Record Core ...

JAKARTA - PT Bank Negara Indonesia (Persero) Tbk reported its highest pre-provision operating profit in half a decade during the second quarter of 2026, even as net profit growth slowed due to intentional provisioning buffers. The state-controlled lender's core banking operations showed clear resilience, with loans expanding at a robust pace and fee income holding steady.

Management framed the quarter as a period of deliberate balance-sheet strengthening rather than a sign of underlying weakness. While net profit came in below some analyst estimates, the bank set aside larger provisions to cushion against potential asset quality stress in the second half of the year. Executives stressed that this buffer-building is proactive, not reactive, and that early warning indicators remain stable.

Loan growth was a standout, driven by corporate lending and a recovery in the small and medium enterprise segment. The bank also noted healthy growth in low-cost current account and savings account deposits, which helped keep funding costs in check despite a competitive deposit market. Net interest margin remained under mild pressure, but the bank's cost-to-income ratio improved as digital channels absorbed more transaction volume.

On the call, executives highlighted that the bank's return on equity stayed above its cost of equity, a metric they say justifies continued investment in technology and branch rationalization. They also pointed to improving asset yields in the export-oriented manufacturing sector, which has benefited from stronger commodity prices.

Looking ahead, BNI maintained its full-year guidance for high single-digit loan growth and stable credit costs. The bank expects provisioning to normalize in the coming quarters as the macro outlook becomes clearer. Management reiterated that they will not chase market share at the expense of pricing discipline, particularly in the consumer segment where competition has intensified.

The stock reacted modestly to the earnings release, with investors focusing on the gap between operating strength and reported net profit. Several analysts on the call pressed for more detail on the timing of provision releases, but the bank declined to give a specific schedule, saying only that the level of coverage remains adequate for the current cycle.

the quarter painted a picture of a bank that is running its core business well while preparing for possible headwinds. The record PPOP suggests that BNI's franchise is generating enough earnings power to absorb shocks without needing to raise capital or cut lending. That positioning, management argued, gives the bank flexibility to act if opportunities arise in the second half of the year.
