The 10-Year Treasury Bond Yields Nearly 5% Right Now. Here's Why I'd Still Choose PepsiCo for Passive Income.

The safety of government-guaranteed bonds is compelling to be sure. There are just a couple of nagging drawbacks that I can't live with. Maybe you can.

With the 10-year Treasury yield hovering close to 5 percent, income investors have a tempting alternative to stocks. A guaranteed return backed by the full faith of the U.S. government is hard to argue with on the surface. But that yield comes with a catch that matters over long time horizons: it is fixed. Once you lock in, you get the same coupon payment year after year, and inflation quietly erodes what that money can actually buy.

PepsiCo offers a different proposition. The company has raised its dividend for more than five decades, a streak that few businesses can match. That track record matters because it means the income stream tends to grow, not stagnate. A bond coupon stays flat. A dividend from a stable consumer staples giant has historically moved higher with time.

There is also the question of total return. Treasury holders get their principal back at maturity, nothing more. PepsiCo shareholders own a piece of a business with pricing power, global brands, and steady cash flow. That can translate into capital appreciation on top of the dividend.

Neither option is risk free. Stocks fluctuate, and bonds carry opportunity cost if rates move. But for investors focused on building durable passive income, the growth potential of a proven dividend payer often outweighs the certainty of a fixed coupon.
