EDMONTON -- Alberta's finance minister and the minister responsible for hospitals are both leaving their positions and will not seek re-election, marking a significant shift in Premier Danielle Smith's cabinet.
Finance Minister Nate Horner and Health Minister Adriana LaGrange confirmed they will step down from their roles. Horner, who has served as finance minister since 2022, cited personal reasons for his decision. LaGrange, who oversaw hospital operations and health system reforms, said she wants to spend more time with her family after years in public service.
Both ministers were considered key figures in Smith's government. Horner helped steer the province's budget through periods of economic uncertainty, while LaGrange faced the challenging task of managing Alberta's strained healthcare system, including emergency room closures and staffing shortages.
Their departures mean Smith will need to fill two major cabinet positions ahead of the next provincial election. Political observers say this could signal a broader reshuffle as the premier looks to refresh her team. Neither minister has announced immediate plans for what they will do after leaving office.
The vacancies come as Alberta deals with ongoing pressures around healthcare funding, resource revenue management, and public sector bargaining. Smith is expected to name replacements in the coming weeks.
